This week when we were out on Woodsy W.  we talked about the upcoming Earth Day! I introduced "sit spots."  Sit spots are peaceful spots that you can sit and notice your surroundings, sometimes just sitting, sometimes journaling, etc.  Most students settled down with ease in their self-chosen spots and wrote down beautiful little poems about nature!

What happened this past week?

Happy vacation to all!!

I thought I would show the highlights of last week!  We dove into more Opinion writing - took an art walk where we explored three famous pieces of art!  We decided which one we liked the best and wrote about it.  We talked about how when we give our opinion we have to give reasons why we like it!  We also spent some time collaborating on a door mural.  We had to communicate with each other about how we would design it and what we thought were important ways how we can help the Earth! It came out so awesome! On Friday we ended with choice time OUTSIDE! It was beautiful weather!!

Today we watched a webinar put on by Microsoft and Jane Goodall.  Jane Goodall is an amazing, inspirational environmental/chimpanzee activist (if you don't know her)!  Her story is so inspiring because she had a dream as a young child to learn and help animals, later went off to Africa to observe chimpanzees!  She discovered many fascinating facts about chimps.
Many of us were saying we would love to do something like this when we get older! Her message is powerful - getting proactive to help our environment balance humans and animals living upon it!

On Wednesday we had a taste of syrup & donuts out in the woods.  We talked about what the Maple trees of our VT forests are up to right now.  The next day Sophia's family brought in some delicious syrup which was a bit lighter than our first taste test.  It was neat to try sweet syrup from two different sugar makers!

Then later on Friday, we had a day of celebrating with our Dr. Seuss party and then celebrating expected behavior with a class lunch date! It was such a fun-filled day!

We had such a fabulous celebration of the students' nonfiction writing projects!  Thank you to all the families who were able to attend, it was not at an ideal time of the day.   Please enjoy the class Chatter Pix video below!

A trip to the sun!

For some reason this past week I was struggling with an idea on what to do on our Woodsy Wednesday.  Free exploration is always a large part of our time outside but I always like to have a theme, story, or purpose in mind when we go out.  Then it all came together, we would learn about the sun (part of our Space unit) out under the sun!  We read a book and then talked about where the sun is in relation to the planets.  What better way to understand the solar system than to build one! We all worked really hard rolling the planets into what we thought could be the correct size.   This was a blast and so meaningful.  This day really felt special because it reminded me that outdoor education just amplifies the curriculum into relevant more meaningful learning! Everyone walked away feeling proud about their hard work and most could recite the order of the planets!

A few announcements being sent home today to look for: Book orders due Friday!   Reading party on Thursday!!   A note about some up...
